The Squadron offers these courses to members and also in the interest of safety to the boating public.
Fees are applicable to participate in each subject, manuals are provided.

SEAMANSHIP NAVIGATION & PILOTAGE, RADIO VOICE PROCEDURE, RADAR WATCHKEEPING

The courses cover both theoretical and practical tuition and examinations.

Squadron Instructors and courses, are held in high regards by the relevant authorities i.e. Police, Universities and Sailing Clubs.  St John's training division are engaged to teach members to "Senior First Aid certification level".
Briefly the course subject matter is as follows:

Seamanship
ImageContent of Course:
Regulations for the prevention of Collisions at Sea,
Navigation lights and pilotage;
Knots, splices and their use;
Types of anchors and applications; Launching and recovery of trailable craft on ramps and beaches; Close quarter manoeuvres;
Fire extinguishers and fire types; Safety at sea; Flares and their use; and Basic weather forecast interpretation.
This course is recognised and accepted by the Dept Transport as sufficient to obtain a Boat Operators Licence.
The  Instructor will supply verification of your pass in the form of a Certificate.
This course is also a pre requisite for Operational status.

COASTAL NAVIGATION AND PILOTAGE :
ImageThis is a comprehensive course on coastal navigation.
Course Content :
Latitude and Longitude;
Chart projections;
compass and true bearings through to laying of a course on a chart, and the many ways of fixing the craft's position at sea.
In addition to the above the course touches briefly on the theory of the latest G.P.S. systems used on many small craft.


RADIO VOICE PROCEDURE :
ImageThis course covers all the subjects and information to enable the student to sit for "Third Class Commercial Operators Certificate of Proficiency in Radio-Telephony" as issued by Frequency Management Dept. This is a requirement when  using Marine VHF frequencies.
Course Content:
Types of marine sets available,
frequencies used;
radio procedures;
phonetic alphabet;
distress messages;
basic radio maintenance.
Participation in this course is encouraged for members who may volunteer to assist in daily radio duties.

RADAR WATCHKEEPING:
ImageCourse Content:
Radar theory and development;
Parameters of radar operations;
Control functions: Operational responsibilities,
factors and effects;
Contact acquisition;
Contact plotting and range determination.
Practical training using the Squadron Operations Centre Radar unit, is included in the course
